Peony That Can Withstand Minus 43 Degrees Celsius - Chinese Tree Peony

Chinese tree peonies exhibit excellent cold resistance

Low temperature resistance: Purple spotted peonies are very cold resistant and can tolerate temperatures as low as -43 ℃. This characteristic makes it particularly suitable for planting in northern China, such as Ningxia, Xinjiang, Qinghai, Shaanxi, Xizang, Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Jilin, etc.

High altitude growth: Purple spotted peonies are native to the abandoned secondary forests in the high-altitude areas of Gansu. They can grow on high mountains at an altitude of 1100-3200 meters. The lowest temperature in winter in these areas usually reaches minus 30 ℃, and even in some areas it can reach minus 38 ℃.

Other cold resistance measures:

Winter management: Purple spotted peonies require appropriate management during winter, such as leaf removal, pruning, and fertilization, to ensure their healthy growth and survive the cold winter.

Cold protection: In spring, to prevent the frost damage to flower buds caused by the late spring cold, measures such as setting up a shed or covering with plastic film can be taken for protection. Potted purple peonies should be kept indoors for insulation and antifreeze in winter, and should not be left early in spring. They should be moved to a leeward and sunny place for maintenance.
