Tree Peony Care-Sprouting

The temperature and climate in each region are also different.  In some regions with a warm climate, peonies may have already sprouted. So what should we pay attention to?

The precautions for peony germination mainly include the following points:

Maintain sunshine: After peonies sprout in spring, it is important to ensure sufficient light. Appropriate lighting is beneficial for photosynthesis to synthesize nutrients, promote new branch germination, and facilitate later flowering. However, in late spring, the light becomes stronger, and at this time, it is important to pay attention to proper shading to avoid strong sunlight exposure at noon.

Controlled watering: Peony flowers have drought resistance, but still need to be watered during the spring growth stage. The principle of "seeing dry and seeing wet" should be followed to keep the soil dry and thoroughly watered, so that the soil contains a certain amount of water. Stop watering in cloudy and rainy weather, and pay attention to drainage when there is accumulated water.

Reasonable fertilization: Spring is the stage of rapid growth of peonies, during which there is a higher demand for nutrients. Thin fertilizer can be applied every two weeks, mainly organic fertilizer such as farmyard manure, compost, animal manure, etc. In late spring, when the growth of peonies is stable, some fertilizers with strong fertility can be applied, such as compound fertilizer, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, etc.

Pruning treatment: After the peony sprouts in spring, pruning can be carried out to remove dead, old, and diseased branches, reduce nutrient consumption, adjust plant type, increase ornamental value, and promote better growth in the later stage.

Sprouting treatment: After peony sprouts, it should be done as soon as possible. If it is a newly planted peony, only the top bud needs to be retained, and all the side buds can be wiped out. For plants that have been planted for 2-3 years, healthy buds can be retained after germination and other weak buds can be pruned.

The above precautions are for reference only. It is recommended to adjust according to the growth of peonies and local climate conditions. If necessary, it is recommended to consult a professional horticulturist or read books related to peony cultivation.
